Feeling Vulnerable: Becoming a Team

The stories below are from very successful classroom leaders who developed their skills despite struggles. These stories are anonymous, but I assure you that these teachers work in our district and have persevered despite initial challenges.

 

First Day Jitters

     I started at Horizon as a relatively newly seasoned Sped teacher; meaning I had prior experience in Sped however it wasn’t A LOT and it wasn’t the greatest. I started the day with my nerves completely rattled as they would be in a new school, not knowing a single person and being a relatively new teacher. I entered my class with a million ideas about how the day was going to go. One of them being I have no idea what my educational assistant was supposed to be doing. And then she arrived! We did a lot of talking! And when I mean a lot , I mean A LOT! As she began to detail  her background of 15+ years in this classroom, my nerves became more rattled than they were before! How that was possible I have no idea how but they were! There were a million thoughts running through my head! How could I live up to the other teachers she worked with? Why isn’t she the teacher with so much experience? Is she going to want to change her ways based off of the needs of the kiddos? I’m never going to get through this day! And so on went the thoughts! In the end of our conversation, she says to me “So what are your thoughts for our classroom?” Wow! She said “our classroom”! Her saying these words gave me the message that we were a team! We continued to talk about OUR vision of the classroom and for our students. We talked about our roles and expectations. Having something in writing about our roles and the expectations for our educational assistants would have definetely been less time consuming but it was a learning experience.

     Today, we collaborate daily about my expectations for our kiddos; what’s working and what needs to “tweeked. ” There is a continuous flow of training going on for both of us in all kinds of areas; for example how to use technology, teaching strategies vs. disabilities, and managing daily stress, etc. I am proud to say that still to this day, years later, we continue to work as a team.
